About University 

Siberian State Medical University was established in 1878 by Alexander II as a Faculty of Medicine at Tomsk Imperial University.  In 1930 the Faculty of Medicine of Tomsk State University was reorganized into Tomsk Medical Institute and later, in 1992 Tomsk Medical Institute received university status and changed its name to Siberian State Medical University. 

Siberian State Medical University is one of the few institutions in Russia that has a multidisciplinary university hospital for medical study in Russia. This affects the teaching staff and student body to a large extent. The teaching staff consists of 80% of specialists with academic degrees and titles and 50% practicing doctors. Our students have a unique opportunity to apply the knowledge of study MBBS gained in the classroom at the clinical practice in Russia. What is more, the university hospital, the place where research and education in Russia are conducted, welcomes more than 100, 000 patients from all over Russia annually.

Today, Siberian State Medical University provides undergraduate courses, graduate courses, and postgraduate courses to get degrees in biochemistry, degrees in biophysics, degrees in general medicine, degrees in pediatrics, degrees in dentistry, degrees in pharmacy, and degrees in nursery fields. University supplies its students with all the needed books, technical equipment, and facilities to become qualified doctors or medical scientists in Russia and to study MBBS in Russia.

It is one of the few universities in Russia that has a hospital that is not only providing medical care for citizens in the Tomsk Region and other regions but, also, is a full-fledged training center for students and medical professionals. It has more than 6 500 students that come from 39 countries worldwide. In 2017, Siberian State Medical University obtained the status of the only flagship medical university in Russia to study MBBS.

Recognition

In 2017 Siberian State Medical University obtained the status of the only flagship medical university in Russia. The University was selected by the Government of the Russian Federation to take part in the implementation of the project aimed at increasing education in Russia. Remarkably, Siberian State Medical University is one of the 2 specialized universities selected to work on this project.

Siberian State Medical University and its faculty are members of several national and international consortiums. In 2014 SSMU initiated the launch of an international consortium on infectious diseases, namely the Tomsk Opisthorchiasis Consortium (TOPIC) that involves Switzerland, Germany, Thailand, the USA, Netherlands. International partners include universities in Russia and research organizations in the UK, Germany, the USA, Korea, Japan, Latvia, the CIS region, and others. Also, the University is a holder of several Erasmus+ grants for student and staff mobility.

Accommodation

Siberian State Medical University provides a student hostel for more than 1,500 students. Students can get either an individual room in a hostel or a double shared room. Rooms are equipped with modern furniture and bedding to make life there comfortable. Every section has two cozy rooms, a kitchen, a shower, and a bathroom. The hostel for international students is located in the center of the city 30mtr from the University’s main building. The hostel has well-equipped rooms with all modern facilities for 3 seated big rooms upgraded comforts, and central heating. 

Reception, laundry, cleaning and washing personnel, reading room, and computer hall are always available for every hostel resident. The cost of living in Russia can be completely affordable making the hostel a comfortable place for living. Students can find their national food being served in the hostel canteens and also many Russian restaurants and other necessary stores are situated nearby. The infrastructure is well-developed and the environment is friendly and safe. The rooms are well-furnished and clean. There are laundry rooms and dining areas as well. 

About City

Tomsk is located in the very heart of Siberia, about 3.6 thousand kilometers east of Moscow, on the border of the West Siberian Plain and the spurs of the Kuznetsk Alatau on the right bank of the Tom River, 50 km from the place of its confluence with the Ob River. The city is located on the edge of a taiga natural zone.

Tomsk is the oldest educational center in Russia and the scientific center in Siberia. Today, students make up one-fifth of the population of Tomsk – more than 117 thousand people. The wooden architecture of Siberia is a bright page in the history of Russian architecture. In Tomsk, wooden architecture is original and expressive. It is here that whole groups of wooden buildings of the late 19th – early 20th centuries have been preserved. You will need at least three days to explore a large number of local attractions.

Tomsk also is a place of quality education in Russia for over 50,000 young students. It is the main educational and research center of Siberia. Tomsk University provides its students with internationally recognized higher degrees and upcoming opportunities concerning future career opportunities in Russia in the labor market.
