About University

Irkutsk National Research Technical University was opened in May 1930 in Irkutsk city as the Siberian Mining Institute, to begin training for the gold mining industry in Russia. In 1938 Irkutsk State Technical University was renamed the Mining and Metallurgy Institute and in 1960 Irkutsk State Technical University became the Polytechnic Institute.

Currently, the University has 18,000 both Russian and international students including 1,300 full-time foreign students. INRTU’s ultimate and prior goal is bringing up a new generation of specialists empowered to change the way they think and work towards a sustainable future. The idea of sustainable development is embodied in all educational programs.

The University offers bachelor’s courses, master’s courses, and doctoral programs to study architecture,  study design, study transport planning, study aircraft engineering, study non-ferrous metallurgy, study heat power, study electrical engineering,  study mechanical engineering, study chemical technology, study computational physics, the study applied mathematics and IT, study oil and gas engineering, the study applied geology, study sustainable economy, study ecology, study international business, study advertising, study journalism, and study law.

In 1950 the basis of the Mining and Metallurgical Institute began training engineers and opened new study departments: Civil, Mechanical, Chemical Technology, Engineering, and Geological Survey. In 1970 University provides a studying process in 8 faculties of the Institute which trains specialists in 39 scientific profiles. 

 Institute built a town with large academic buildings, student dormitories, and stadiums on the left bank of the Angara river. Institute became the largest university in Irkutsk. In June 1978 the first edition of Architects was made by the department of architectural design. In the 1990s, the Irkutsk State Technical University organized new humanities faculties and in 1993 received the status of a technical university

Irkutsk State Technical University became the largest university in Russia, Eastern Siberia, which enrolled more than 50,000 alumni. Among students and graduates at Irkutsk State Technical University, there are citizens of the Russian Federation and citizens from more than 18 countries. Today Irkutsk National Research Technical University has more than 100 educational departments.

Recognition

The strategic partners of the University are the largest regional and foreign companies. INRTU provides services to foreign companies in such various areas as oil and gas exploration, composite machining, chemical synthesis engineering, BIM technologies in construction, ecology risks assessment, and integrated ecological modeling; as well as contributes to the construction of the most sophisticated domestically built civil airplane, MC-21.

INRTU’s industrial partners provide students with internships abroad and future employment opportunities in Russia. Among our partners are Huawei, Samsung, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, Polymetal International PLC, Schlumberger, British Petroleum, Halliburton, En+ Group PLC, Irkut Corporation JSC, Rosneft Oil Company, etc. INRTU conducts academic cooperation with Erasmus, Fulbright, and various partner-universities from Asia and Europe.

INRTU is a member of international associations, networks, and organizations such as Silk Road University Network, Romualdo del Bianco Foundation, and the Association of SINO Russian technical universities. It is planned to further international relations development with foreign countries, expand new direction in the field of Ecology and Green Engineering, further academic exchange development, and widen exchange programs, creating new laboratories.

Accommodation

Students of Irkutsk State Technical University are offered to live in well-heated and fully furnished comfortable rooms in the Students’ Dormitory. It has a convenient location and is situated 15 minutes from the main studying building. The campus is surrounded by Russian food stores, shops, parks, bus stops, banks, and other needed living facilities in Russia. The dorm is located in the city center, so students can visit cafes, Russian restaurants, and historical museums or just go for a walk. 

Accommodation facilities for students are organized on a sharing basis. There are twin – and triple – rooms. Male and female students live separately on different floors. All the hostels for students are protected by the police. There are special rooms for students where they can socialize, have fun and make new friends. All the rooms are provided with a bed, mattress, pillow, blanket, desk, chair, heater, and lighting, suitable for both: study and relaxation, as well as Internet access and telephone for students to get in touch with their close friends and relatives.

About City 

Irkutsk is one of the great Siberian cities and by right is considered to be the capital of Eastern Siberia. Irkutsk is located in almost the very center of Asia. Irkutsk is laid out on the banks of the Angara River about 66 kilometers from Lake Baikal and is a great place to live and study in Russia. The city occupies 30 600 hectares. The city is divided into four administrative districts Sverdlovsky, Lenmsky, Pravoberezhny, and Oktyabrsky.

In terms of population, Irkutsk is one of the largest cities in Eastern Russia. The population of Irkutsk is 591000 citizens. Irkutsk lies between the plains and the mountains. The basic water artery is the Angara – the only river, which flows from Lake Baikal. From the West, the Angara is joined by another large river system – Irkut.

From the moment of its founding, Irkutsk has been a commercial city. Throughout its history, Irkutsk has been renowned for its bustling markets and its merchants for its philanthropy. Now, Irkutsk is an important commercial-industrial center in Eastern Siberia, carrying out trade with 70 foreign countries.

Irkutsk is a major educational center and scientific center in Siberia. Modern-day Irkutsk is a major industrial center. Its primary industries are electrical production, car manufacturing, production of building materials, food processing, textile, medical industry, and many others.
