First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M.Sechenova is one of the oldest higher medical establishments of the Russian Federation. It is located in the capital of the Russian Federation. Moscow is a major political, economic, cultural and scientific center in Russia and Europe. Moscow is situated on the Moskva River. The city is well known worldwide for its ancient architecture which consists of many different unique breathtaking buildings. The history of the University has begun from the establishment of the Faculty of General Medicine of Moscow Imperial University. It was founded in 1758.
In 1919, Central Scientific Medical Library named after I.M. Sechenov was founded. Today, students have a golden opportunity to widen their knowledge with the help of a unique collection of scientific publications in the field of medicine.
In 1925, a Postgraduate Course was established.
In 1930, there was a reorganization of the Medical Faculty of Moscow State University into First Moscow Medical Institute. It was an independent higher educational institution with two faculties: the Therapeutic Prophylactic Faculty and the Sanitary and Prophylactic Faculty.
In 1940, the Institute was awarded by the Order of Lenin.
In 1955, it was named after I.M. Sechenov. In three years, the Faculty of Pharmacy was established.
In 1959, the Evening Faculty of Medicine was organized.
The Clinical Campus of I.M. Sechenov was established in 1987. It is recognized as one of the best in the whole world. It is a unique place, where future doctors study, physicians continue medical education, scientists carry out research, the most difficult patients get specialized high-quality medical care. The Clinical Campus has been a strong basis for research and education, as well as a center of high quality medical care for more than a century already.
In 1989, the Faculty of Advanced Training for Physicians was founded (today, it is Postgraduate Professional Training of Physicians). In a year, the Faculty of Training of Research and Teaching Staff was established.
In 1990, the Museum of the History of Medicine was established.
In 1991, the Faculty of Higher Nursing Training was founded. In two years, the foundation of the Faculty of Preventive Medicine for Postgraduate Professional Training happened.
In 1996, the Faculty of Health Care Management was founded. In two years, the first and the second Faculties of Medicine were united into a single Faculty of Medicine.
In 2001, the Faculty of Dentistry was established.
In 2008, the University was awarded a Platinum Uncia 2008. There was a great celebration of 250 – year history of this higher medical institution. In two years, Moscow Medical Academy named after I.M. Sechenov was given a status of the University and has changed its name into First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov.
Currently, the University is the biggest educational, scientific and medical complex in the whole Russian Federation for training, certification and continuing professional development in medical and pharmaceutical fields. It has 20 buildings for studies, classrooms and lecture halls.
The University has 177 departments with well-qualified academic staff. There are 8 faculties at the University. Graduate and postgraduate trainings are available at all the faculties of the University. About 600 students graduate annually from the oldest faculty of the University – the Faculty of Medicine. Students can obtain both undergraduate and postgraduate levels of education in different directions. More than 35000 students have been trained by First Moscow State Medical University till the present date. Teaching staff of the University consists of 2, 500 lecturers. 85% of the University lecturers have academic degree. There are 4 Actual Members and 3 Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 64 Actual Members and 38 Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (RAMS), 3 Actual Members and 1 Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Education, about 70 honored science workers of the Russian Federation, more than 100 laureates of the State Prize, the Russian President and Government Prize among the teaching staff.
Currently, 9000 students are obtaining education at First Moscow State Medical University. First Moscow State Medical University develops wide scientific cooperation with medical research and training centers abroad. First Moscow State Medical University is an active member of World Heath Organization (WHO). WHO centers for Nursing Care and Obstetrics, Tuberculosis and 3-day Malaria have been created on the basis of the University.
