General Information

Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography is a higher educational institution in Moscow. Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography was formed in 1930 as the Land Survey Institute was divided into two institutions of higher education: Moscow Geodesy Institute (now Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography and the Moscow Institute of Land Management). In 1993 the Moscow Geodesy Institute was transformed into the Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography. 

Today Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography prepares graduates in the field of Geodesy, Mapping, Aerial Photography, Photogrammetry, Optical Instruments, and Geographic Information Systems, as well as Architects and Lawyers. The material and technical base of Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography includes two major academic buildings, 3 auxiliary educational buildings, 2 student dormitories, a sports camp, and a library. Currently, Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography has 7 study faculties, 42 study departments, and a staff of 600 skilled teachers.

Every year Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography accepts 3500 international students within Russia and 29 foreign countries. In 74 years Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography has trained 32,000 professionals. The glorious past of university, deep-rooted pedagogical and scientific traditions, accumulated throughout 225 years of its development, the importance and vitality of geodetic science and practice for many branches of the national economy, a wide range of specialists being trained at the University – all these assure the leading role of university as a specialized institution of higher education.

Today, the University is actively participating in the exploration of outer space and the application of the results of this exploration to science, economy, agriculture, geological prospecting, and ecology. University renders great assistance to many countries of the world in professional training of national scientific and engineering staff for geodesy and cartography – more than 2,000 foreign graduates from the University are working now in 85 countries all over the world. 

University educates researchers employing postgraduate courses; eight specialized academic councils are established for scientific theses and dissertations to be defended. The studies that are being conducted in university embrace almost the whole range of problems of geodesy science, cartography science, and cadastre, as well as such specific fields as precise instrument-making, geoinformatics, ecology, and remote sensing.

Accommodation and Housing 

University provides its international students with the option of accommodation in the Student Hostel. It has a convenient location in the same city center. Every hostel resident can visit restaurants with a variety of cuisines, museums, art galleries, concert halls, and other interesting places. On the ground floor of one of the residential buildings, there is a dining room, a leisure room with areas for self-study, a TV room, a small library, and a game console.

All rooms are shared between 2-4 students and are fully supplied with all needed furniture and technologies. Every room has a permanent Wi-Fi connection, a system of central heating, air conditioning, and a permanent electricity supply. The rooms are equipped with beds, desks, chairs, and wall shelves for each student. Wardrobes and shoe racks located in the hallway are shared by the students living in the unit as well as a refrigerator. Blankets, pillows, and bed sheets are also provided to students.
