Understanding the Russian Student Visa

The student visa permits international students to enter Russia and pursue full-time academic programs at recognized institutions. Unlike tourist or business visas, a student visa is customized to the academic timeline and provides legal residency for the study period.

Types of Russian Visas for Students

When planning to study in Russia, it’s important to understand the visa options available:

Student Visa

This is the primary visa for international students enrolled in full-time Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD programs at accredited Russian institutions.

  • Duration: Issued for up to 1 year, renewable annually.
  • Requirements: Invitation letter (visa support), admission proof, valid passport, visa application, photos, and medical insurance.
  • Rights: Legal stay for study duration, registration upon arrival, and limited part-time work (as per regulations).

Short-term Academic Visa

Ideal for exchange students, interns, or researchers attending short courses or academic events.

  • Duration: 30 to 90 days.
  • Requirements: Official invitation from host institution, valid ID, and supporting documents.
  • Limitations: No long-term stay or employment allowed.

Invitation Letter (Visa Support)

A mandatory document issued by a Russian university or authorized body, confirming a student’s admission.

  • Purpose: Justifies the visa application and confirms the applicant’s program and eligibility.

Note: Without this letter, visa processing is not possible. RECAS and similar agencies typically provide it post-admission.

Application Submission

Begin by selecting your desired course and university. Submit the following documents to RECAS via email:

  • Completed application form
  • Copy of international passport (valid for at least two years)
  • Copy of higher secondary school certificate with subject details

Upon review, RECAS will notify you of acceptance and issue an Admission Confirmation Letter within week.

Step 2: Obtaining the Invitation Letter

To receive an official Invitation Letter from a Russian university, provide:

  • Completed application form
  • Copy of international passport
  • Copy of school certificate
  • Payment of $500 for the Invitation Letter

Send these documents and payment receipt to RECAS. The Invitation Letter, issued by the Federal Migration Service, takes approximately 40–45 days.

Step 3: Visa Application

With the Invitation Letter, apply for a student visa at your nearest Russian Embassy or Consulate. Required documents include

  • Completed visa application form.
  • Original passport (valid for at least two years)
  • Legalized secondary school certificate
  • HIV/AIDS test certificate
  • Official Invitation Letter
  • passport-sized photos (3.5 x 4.5 cm)

Step 4: Arrival in Russia

After obtaining your visa, inform RECAS of your flight details, including date and time of arrival. A RECAS representative will meet you at the airport. Failure to provide arrival information may result in deportation by Russian immigration authorities.

 Step 5: University Enrollment

Upon arrival, present the following to the university’s International Department:

  • Original documents
  • Payment receipt for first-year expenses

Registration must occur within three working days. The International Office will assist with visa extension and complete the admission process within 1–3 working days, allowing you to commence classes promptly.
